However, I do still have another Thinkpad with Windows on because many of my customers still use Windows and quite rightly the need to see our solutions on the platform that they are using. So I have been thinking about whether I should upgrade my Windows box to Vista. The advertising is not very informative. "Wow" is all very striking but it doesn't tell me how Vista is going to help me do my job. What particularly worries me is that just about every screen shot I see of Vista is showing the new application switcher. Now of course it looks quite cool, as it did when the concept was first introduced in Mac OS/X and Linux, but it is little more than ALT-TAB. Don't get me wrong - eye candy is absolutely important for a geek like me - here is a clip of the Red Hat interface for example. It's just I can't understand why Vista doesn't seem to show anything else. Even on Microsoft's "100 reasons why Vista page" there it is in the top corner.

I came across an interesting post on Wild Bill's site. 30 days of Living with Vista. It is a very interesting read. I think I will hold off the upgrade for now.

Just about to get hold of a Lenovo Thinkpad X60 Tablet. It'll come with Vista too... :)
Hey dude, hope this post finds you and your family well and healthy. Long time...
So Vista... you should try it yourself and actually put time aside to learn about it with an open mind and balanced approach. I know this could be hard since you're a hardcore Lotus chap but seriously, just try and you'll be pleasantly suprised.
Nice one

Rory Dude! Of course I will try Vista. I've been using Windows for (counts on fingers) 16 years - and I was using DOS before that! So of course I want to try the new version.
I'm a geek. I'd upgrade my toaster if I could find a new driver for it :-)Are you going to try Notes 8?
I downloaded the public beta and was about to start playing a couple of nights ago when I read the "install WebSphere patch XXX" and decided to put it off.
Myself and another chap at work will be putting a VPC together to play with though, so yes I am going to try it. As you say, once a geek... I looks cool from what I've seen so far though. Must be exciting times?
ciao

Ha ha ha. Rory you cheeky monkey! You know very well that there is NO Websphere in the Lotus Notes client so it could not possibly ask for a websphere patch! None of your myth making here me old son ;-)
But with Eclipse based Notes 8, Enterprise Web 2.0 software in Connections, new Quickr and 30% growth Lotus is a pretty exciting place at the moment.
Hey Ports. Enjoyed the 30 day Vista experience and the attached forum and can't say that from a personal perspective I would spend the money to upgrade from XP (which is a pretty stable OS and does what it ought to). The interesting thing is this - will business buy into it? It's all very well being able to burn CD's and look at photographs, but how good will it be at running business applications? With companies like Dell blowing hot and cold about releasing their PC's with either XP or Vista, how long will it be before companies are forced to upgrade, and end up with an OS that has no significant benefits (64 bit notwithstanding) but at huge cost? The only reason I might consider Vista is because Flight Sim X recommends Vista, but I am still not convinced!!
