Star Wars IV in 168k

Data expands to fill available space right? So when you had a 1k Sinclair ZX81 it didn't take that long, but with the 16k RAM pack it took a little longer to fill. Then it was easy to fill 48k on the Spectrum. Next thing and, despite the apocryphal story linking this to Bill Gates, we did indeed breach the 640k a PC came with. A 1.44MB floppy disk didn't last much longer. A 4Gb iPod can only store 1000 songs. Now 10Gb doesn't seem so much because that is barely the contents of 3 DVD's. My last PC came with a 200Gb hard drive and I have already filled over half of it (and I haven't ripped a fraction of my CD's yet).

So it is refreshing to see something go the opposite direction. Forget your DVD, Dobly Digital 5.1, Progressive Scan, SCAD, 12 disc special edition. This is the first* Star Wars film in less than 200k. Clicky Clicky to take a look. Wait for it to say "Foldsfive Presents" - that is the beginning. I figure that if you have read all that geeky crap you are the sort of person who will appreciate it. I'm guessing most people will give up at "16k RAM pack" :-) I should say that the GIF/film/idea is courtesy of the excellent but hugely politically irreverent B3ta Web Site.

* Don't try arguing The Phantom Menace is the first Star Wars film. Just don't.

The so-called 'prequels' were terrible, over-bloated talk-fests, with a teensy-weensy bit of action.

What's worse... they gave the ending away in 1983!

And the Matrix is brilliant. The sequels however aren't...

Come come boys. Settle down. The Star Wars prequels arn't bad, they were just unable to live up to the preposterous expectations set by their fore runners. Nothing could have lived up to that. On top of that, we saw the first films as kids and are then judging the new ones in our late 30's early 40's. Not really fair.

As for the matrix sequals, they were excellent science fiction films. The problem is that most people who went to see the Matrix aren't particualrly fond of SciFi. The Matrix appealed to a broad cross section of folks due to it's excellent special effects, wild action and interesting premiss. In a way The Matrix appealing to such a broad view based made the sequals the victims of it's success.

I'll have to bite as well (and maybe stir), Shawshank falls in the same category as it does for Darren with Blade (but not Armageddon), I would watch it back to back for a day. But I would put a few others in there as well, Snatch, Green Mile, Snatch, Oceans 11 (new), Snatch, Italian Job (old), Snatch, any Bond with Sean Connery as the man himself, and of course Snatch. Some might say there are a few stinkers in there, but I don't care.

Last Monday I was flying to Scotland for a few days to have a chat with a few of our customers up there. I thought I would show them due respect so on Sunday afternoon I popped into Marks and Spencer and bought a new suit. Remove a security tag redux

A month or so ago I posted a story about how I was forced to remove a security ink tag from a suit I had bought. You can read all about it by clicking here. The feedback I received from that post made me realise how common a problem this is. Little did I expect that so soon I would be faced by a similar challenge. Some top friends of ours bought us this lovely dress for our new born daughter Lucy A quick look under the hem and there it is - our friend the security tag. Aside from the fact that this device is neither green nor from Marks and Spencers, it is apparent that it looks different from the ink tag I documented in the previous story. However, even though it is white and round rather than green and oblong, a quick look at the back shows that it is fundamentally the same.
